Abstract

The first, second, and third-level distribution cabinets are common classifications in power systems, primarily categorized based on their position and function within the power supply system. Below is a brief introduction to the main differences among these three types of distribution cabinets:

  1. First-level distribution cabinet (main distribution cabinet):

    • Located at the entrance of the power system, it usually receives power directly from the substation or main switch room.
    • It is mainly used for the conversion from high voltage to low voltage, that is, converting high voltage electrical energy into low voltage electrical energy suitable for use within buildings.
    • It includes equipment such as high-voltage circuit breakers and transformers.
    • It is usually also equipped with metering devices to monitor and record total power consumption.
  2. Second-level distribution cabinet (secondary distribution cabinet/distribution cabinet):

    • Receives power from the first-level distribution cabinet and further distributes it to various areas or floors.
    • At this level, the current has been stepped down to a lower voltage (such as 380V/220V), suitable for the electrical needs of most commercial and residential buildings.
    • It can include devices such as circuit breakers, relays, and electric meters for controlling and protecting circuits.
  3. Third-level distribution cabinet (terminal distribution cabinet/end distribution cabinet):

    • It is the distribution facility closest to the end user, responsible for distributing electricity to specific loads or devices.
    • Generally installed near various rooms or usage points within a building, it is used to control lighting, sockets, and other small electrical devices.
    • It typically includes safety protection devices such as circuit breakers and residual current protectors.

The differences in design and configuration of these distribution cabinets reflect their different roles and importance in the power system. From first to third level, as electricity is gradually distributed, the voltage decreases while control and protection measures become increasingly refined.
