Abstract
With the rapid development of information technology, data centers have increasingly higher requirements for server deployment density and performance, which directly leads to a sharp increase in heat density within the cabinets. Traditional air cooling methods are gradually proving inadequate in the face of such intense heat. The heat dissipation problem caused by high heat density is particularly prominent in enclosed cabinets. This article will explore how intelligent temperature control technology can help enclosed cabinets effectively solve the problem of high heat density dissipation.
I. Challenges of High Heat Density Dissipation
In high-density server cabinets, the increase in the number of servers causes the heat density per unit volume to rise rapidly. Taking the data center of a large Internet company as an example, the deployment density of servers in its high-density cabinets has reached 30 units per cubic meter, nearly double that of traditional cabinets. This has caused the heat density to rapidly increase from the original 5kW per square meter to over 15kW. Under such high heat density, heat accumulates rapidly in a limited space, while the internal space of the cabinet is very limited. This not only restricts the layout of heat dissipation equipment but also makes it difficult for heat to dissipate quickly.
Traditional air cooling methods mainly rely on air flow to dissipate heat. However, air has poor thermal conductivity, with a thermal conductivity of only about 0.024W/(m·K), which is dozens or even hundreds of times lower than that of liquids. In high-density server cabinets, due to the close arrangement of servers, the air flow channels become narrow and complex, and the air resistance increases significantly. This makes it difficult for cooling air to reach each server component evenly, easily forming hot spots in local areas, leading to excessively high temperatures in some servers.
II. Introduction of Intelligent Temperature Control Technology
In the face of the heat dissipation challenges of high-density server cabinets, intelligent temperature control technology has emerged. Intelligent temperature control technology integrates components such as sensors, controllers, and actuators to monitor the temperature and humidity inside the cabinet in real time and automatically adjust the operating status of the heat dissipation equipment according to preset strategies to ensure that the temperature inside the cabinet remains within a safe range.
In enclosed cabinets, intelligent temperature control technology can more precisely control the heat dissipation process. Because the external environment of an enclosed cabinet is relatively isolated from the internal environment, the temperature distribution inside the cabinet can be predicted and adjusted more accurately. The intelligent temperature control system can dynamically adjust parameters such as fan speed and coolant flow rate based on the heat generation and heat dissipation requirements of the servers in the cabinet to achieve optimal heat dissipation.
III. Upgrading and Optimization of Air Cooling Systems
Driven by intelligent temperature control technology, air cooling systems have been significantly upgraded and optimized. High-pressure fans have become one of the key devices for solving the heat dissipation problems of enclosed cabinets. Through unique impeller design and efficient motor drive, high-pressure fans can generate strong pressure to ensure smooth airflow in narrow and complex air ducts. In the high-density cabinets of a certain ultra-large data center, after adopting high-pressure centrifugal fans, the problem of excessively high local hot spot temperatures was successfully solved, making the temperature distribution in the cabinet more uniform and the overall temperature reduced by 8~10℃.
In addition, DC cooling fans have also shown significant advantages in the heat dissipation of high-density server cabinets. Compared with traditional AC fans, DC fans have higher energy efficiency and better noise control capabilities. DC fans support stepless speed regulation over a wide range and can accurately adjust the speed according to temperature changes to achieve precise temperature control. This allows DC fans to maintain a low noise level while achieving efficient heat dissipation, creating a relatively quiet operating environment for the data center.
IV. Innovative Application of Liquid Cooling Technology
With the continuous increase in heat dissipation requirements, liquid cooling technology, with its excellent heat dissipation performance, is gradually becoming a core solution for solving the heat dissipation problems of high-density server cabinets. Liquid cooling technology mainly includes several forms, such as cold plate, immersion, and spray cooling. In enclosed cabinets, cold plate liquid cooling technology and immersion liquid cooling technology are widely used.
Cold plate liquid cooling technology involves directly attaching a cold plate to the heat-generating components of the server, such as the CPU and GPU. The coolant circulates inside the cold plate to dissipate heat. The advantages of this technology are its strong compatibility, relatively low modification cost, and the fact that it does not require large-scale modifications to the existing data center's machine room and cabinets. Immersion liquid cooling technology involves completely immersing the server in an insulating, chemically inert coolant, and the heat is dissipated through the circulation of the coolant. Immersion liquid cooling technology has higher heat dissipation efficiency, but correspondingly, its cost and technical difficulty are also higher.
V. Maintenance and Optimization of Intelligent Temperature Control Systems
The effective operation of intelligent temperature control systems depends on regular maintenance and optimization. Regular inspection and maintenance of the data center can ensure that the cooling infrastructure operates at optimal efficiency
