Abstract

High-voltage switchgear is an indispensable core device in power systems, responsible for power distribution, circuit control, and protection. Its design precision and operational reliability directly affect grid safety. This article will analyze it from three aspects: basic structure, classification system, and typical application scenarios, to build a systematic cognitive framework for beginners.

1. Structural Analysis: A Precise System of Four Chambers Working in Coordination

Modern high-voltage switchgear generally adopts a modular design. Taking the KYN28A-12 type middle cabinet as an example, its cabinet is divided into four major functional units:

1. Busbar Chamber

Located at the top of the cabinet, it uses a three-phase pin-type arranged main busbar system connected to branch busbars through insulated bushings. This area is equipped with a pressure relief plate that can directionally release shock waves when an internal arc fault occurs to prevent accident spread. For example, busbar chambers with current ratings above 3150A use an M-shaped mesh pressure relief structure to ensure pressure release within 10ms.

2. Circuit Breaker Chamber

The core operating unit, equipped with a movable vacuum circuit breaker trolley. The trolley switches between test and working positions via guide rails, during which the live gate mechanism automatically opens and closes the static contact separator. Taking the VS1 type vacuum circuit breaker as an example, its contact system uses copper-chromium alloy material, with a breaking capacity of 40kA and a mechanical life exceeding 20,000 operations.

3. Cable Chamber

Equipped at the bottom with removable aluminum plates for easy cable terminal installation. It contains zero-sequence current transformers and zinc oxide surge arresters to achieve ground fault monitoring and overvoltage protection. A petrochemical enterprise application case shows that this design improves cable construction efficiency by 40% while reducing electric shock risk.

4. Relay and Instrument Chamber

The front panel integrates microcomputer protection devices, status indicator lights, and operation handles. Inside are terminal blocks and DC power modules supporting IEC61850 standard communication protocols. A smart substation project confirmed that this design reduces secondary circuit fault rates by 65%.

2. Classification System: Multidimensional Technological Evolution

According to different technical standards, high-voltage switchgear forms a multidimensional classification system:

1. By Circuit Breaker Installation Method

- Withdrawable (trolley type): such as the KYN series, where the circuit breaker is installed on a withdrawable trolley. During maintenance, replacing the spare trolley can restore power supply. A subway project application showed that the average fault repair time was reduced to 15 minutes.

- Fixed type: such as the XGN2-10 type, using ZN28A-10 vacuum circuit breakers combined with GN30 rotary isolating switches. The structure is compact, reducing costs by 30%, suitable for scenarios with low requirements for power supply continuity.

2. By Cabinet Structure

- Metal-enclosed armored type: each functional unit is independently compartmentalized, isolated by 2mm thick aluminum-zinc coated plates, with internal fault resistance capability up to 31.5kA/1s.

- Metal-enclosed partition type: uses non-metallic partitions, with protection level up to IP4X, suitable for humid environments.

- SF6 gas-insulated type: such as the HXGN15-12 ring main unit, using SF6 gas as the insulating medium, reducing volume by 40%, suitable for space-limited underground substations.

3. By Functional Positioning

- Incoming line cabinet: equipped with CT/PT and circuit breakers to achieve power metering and overcurrent protection.

- Bus coupler cabinet: uses a three-position isolating switch to support single bus sectional operation. A data center application showed that its switching operation time was reduced to 30 seconds.

- Capacitor cabinet: integrates reactive power compensation devices, improving power factor to above 0.95, with annual energy savings reaching 12%.

3. Application Scenarios: Full Chain Coverage from Power Generation to Consumption

1. Power Generation Side Application

In coal-fired power plants, the KYN61-40.5 type switchgear undertakes the task of power transmission from the generator outlet to the step-up transformer. Its rated voltage of 40.5kV and rated current of 3150A meet the needs of 300MW units. Coupled with microcomputer protection devices, it achieves differential protection and over-excitation protection, with fault clearing time controlled within 80ms.

2. Transmission and Distribution Network

In urban ring network power supply systems, the SM6 type ring main unit uses a "three-position" load switch to quickly switch between incoming line, outgoing line, and grounding states. A case in Shanghai Pudong New Area showed that its N-1 redundancy design improved power supply reliability to 99.999%, reducing annual outage time to 5 minutes.

3. Industrial User Side

Steel enterprises' rolling workshops are equipped with XGN15-12 type SF6 ring main units, capable of operating in a wide temperature range from -25°C to +50°C, adapting to high-temperature smelting environments. By configuring temperature compensation devices, contact resistance remains stable within 50μΩ under extreme cold conditions of -40°C.

4. New Energy Integration

In photovoltaic power stations, incoming line cabinets with reverse power protection prevent power feedback to the grid. A 10MW photovoltaic project application showed its 0.2-second level fast protection.
