I. Material Selection: The Art of Balancing Weather Resistance and Cost

Outdoor meter boxes must balance mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and environmental adaptability, with the mainstream solutions divided into two major categories: metal and non-metal.

 

1. Metal materials: Symbols of rigidity and durability

304 stainless steel is the top choice for high-end applications, thanks to its chromium-nickel alloy structure that provides exceptional corrosion resistance, enabling it to maintain a service life of over 10 years even in coastal salt-spray environments or chemical-contaminated areas. Coastal/Typhoon-Prone Areas: Fiberglass boxes (IP66) are undoubtedly the top choice, as their fiber-reinforced structure not only withstands powerful wind impacts but also effectively resists seawater salt spray corrosion and high-pressure water jet erosion. In a real-world case study conducted on a Fujian island community that installed IP66 fiberglass meter boxes, the box surfaces sustained only minor scratches after enduring a Category 12 typhoon, while the internal components remained completely undamaged. In contrast, among metal boxes used concurrently in the same area, 17% experienced deformation or sealing failures. However, it’s important to note that in coastal regions, fiberglass materials containing UV absorbers should be prioritized to prevent long-term exposure to sunlight from causing material degradation.
