Abstract

Five-Prevention Interlocking Device for High-Voltage Switchgear: An Ironclad Rule for Ensuring Personal Safety

In power systems, high-voltage switchgear serves as a critical piece of equipment, performing core functions such as power distribution, control, and protection. Its operating environment is complex and involves high voltage levels; once an erroneous operation occurs, it not only could lead to equipment damage but also directly threaten the safety of operators. To eliminate such risks, the “five-protection” interlocking system for high-voltage switchgear has been developed, becoming an ironclad rule for ensuring personal safety. By implementing both physical and logical safeguards, this system minimizes the likelihood of human error, thereby establishing an insurmountable safety barrier for power operations.

The core essence of the “Five Protections”: Eliminate erroneous operations at the source.

The “Five-Prevention” interlocking device’s “Five-Prevention” specifically refers to: preventing accidental tripping or closing of circuit breakers; preventing the operation of disconnect switches under load; preventing the connection (or closing) of grounding wires (or grounding switches) while live; preventing the closing of circuit breakers with grounding wires (or grounding switches) still connected; and preventing unauthorized entry into energized compartments. These five principles cover the entire operational process of high-voltage switchgear—from equipment startup and shutdown to inspection and maintenance—ensuring that every step is subject to stringent control. For example, when a circuit breaker is in the closed position, the interlocking device will lock the operating mechanism of the disconnect switch, thereby avoiding the fatal error of opening the circuit breaker under load. Similarly, if the grounding switch is not fully opened, the circuit breaker cannot be closed, logically eliminating the risk of energizing the system with the grounding wire still connected. These design features are not merely additive; rather, they employ mechanical transmission, electromagnetic locks, program locks, and other technical means to create a tightly integrated and interdependent protective system.

A Double Safeguard of Mechanics and Logic: The Reliability of Hard Interlocks

The reliability of the “Five-Prevention” devices stems from their “hard interlocking” feature. Unlike traditional protective measures that rely on manual operation, hard interlocking directly intervenes in equipment operations through mechanical structures or electrical circuits, making it mandatory and impossible to bypass. For example, a certain model of high-voltage switchgear employs a mechanical interlocking design: when the isolating switch is in the closed position, its operating shaft inserts into a limiting hole in the circuit breaker’s operating mechanism, physically preventing the circuit breaker from being opened; conversely, when the circuit breaker is closed, the isolating switch’s operating handle is locked in the “operation prohibited” position. This design completely eliminates the risk of arc flash short circuits caused by incorrect operational sequences. Moreover, some devices also incorporate electromagnetic locking technology, which uses energization to engage or de-energization to release the control authority, further enhancing safety protection. The synergistic effect of mechanical and electrical interlocks ensures that the “Five-Prevention” devices can continue to operate reliably even under extreme environmental conditions, making them the “last line of defense” for power system safety.

From Passive Defense to Proactive Early Warning: The Trend Toward Intelligent Upgrades

As the power industry undergoes a smart transformation, “five-protection” devices are also continuously being upgraded. The new-generation products not only retain the core functions of mechanical interlocks but also integrate sensors, microprocessors, and communication modules, enabling a shift from passive protection to proactive early warning. For example, a certain intelligent high-voltage switchgear is equipped with position sensors installed at critical points to monitor in real time the status of disconnect switches and grounding switches, and then uploads this data to a monitoring system. Once an abnormal operation—such as opening a circuit breaker under load—is detected, the system immediately triggers both audible and visual alarms and sends notifications via SMS or app to the mobile phones of management personnel. At the same time, it cuts off the power supply to the control circuit, forcibly terminating the hazardous operation. This closed-loop control model—comprising sensing, analysis, and intervention—has reduced the response time for safety protection from seconds to milliseconds, significantly enhancing the system’s ability to respond to risks. Moreover, some of these devices can also interface with dispatch systems, automatically adjusting interlocking logic based on the operational status of the power grid, thereby further improving the system’s adaptability.

Practical Value: Examining Safety Benefits Through Case Studies

The practical effectiveness of the “Five-Prevention” device has been validated by numerous real-world cases. At one substation, an accidental misoperation occurred due to operator negligence: maintenance personnel attempted to close the switch and restore power without first removing the grounding wire. Fortunately, the “Five-Prevention” device intervened promptly, using an electromagnetic lock to secure the circuit breaker’s operating mechanism, thereby preventing the serious consequences of closing the switch with the grounding wire still connected. Post-event analysis revealed that, without this device, the accident could have triggered a three-phase short circuit, leading to equipment damage and even casualties. In another case, a chemical plant experienced flooding in its high-voltage switchgear following heavy rainfall. An operator inadvertently touched a live compartment, but the mechanical interlocking mechanism of the “Five-Prevention” device effectively prevented the disconnector from opening, thus averting an arc-flash injury accident. These cases demonstrate that the “Five-Prevention” device is not merely a technical standard—it is a true guardian of life safety.

Safety has no small matters; iron rules must not be violated.

The “Five-Prevention” interlocking device for high-voltage switchgear, with its scientific design, reliable performance, and intelligent upgrade capabilities, has become an ironclad rule in the power industry for ensuring personal safety. It is not only a product of technological advancement but also a profound embodiment of the “safety first” philosophy. In today’s world, where electricity demand continues to rise and grid structures are becoming increasingly complex, only by adhering strictly to the “Five-Prevention” principles and rigorously implementing the installation and maintenance of interlocking devices can we solidify the foundation of safe production, ensuring that every kilowatt-hour of electricity transmitted carries with it respect for and protection of human life.
