Abstract
S13/S20 What are the key maintenance points for oil-immersed transformers in outdoor environments?
Oil-immersed transformers rely on transformer oil for heat dissipation and exhibit excellent weather resistance, making them suitable for outdoor installation. The key to maintenance lies in regularly checking the oil level, oil temperature, the color of the moisture absorber (silica gel), and whether there are any oil leaks. A simplified oil sample test should be conducted once a year.
In outdoor environments, the maintenance of S13/S20 oil-immersed transformers requires particular attention to the impact of environmental factors. For example, before the rainy and stormy season, it is essential to carefully inspect the integrity of the lightning protection devices to ensure they can effectively divert lightning currents and prevent damage to the transformer from lightning strikes. At the same time, outdoor transformers are prone to being affected by windblown sand and dust; once these impurities enter the transformer interior, they can accelerate the aging of insulating components and degrade their insulation performance. Therefore, it is important to regularly clean the transformer’s exterior and its surrounding environment to keep them free of debris. In addition, during winter when temperatures drop, special attention should be paid to changes in oil temperature to prevent the oil from becoming too viscous due to excessively low temperatures, which could impair heat dissipation and disrupt the normal operation of the transformer. For transformers installed in coastal areas, the issue of salt-spray corrosion must also be taken into account. Measures such as applying anti-corrosion coatings to the transformer’s exterior can enhance its resistance to corrosion. Only by carrying out these maintenance tasks comprehensively and meticulously can we ensure that S13/S20 oil-immersed transformers operate reliably and safely over the long term in outdoor environments.
