Abstract

In modern power systems, packaged substations, as integrated and modular power equipment, are increasingly becoming a core component in urban power supply, industrial power consumption, and temporary power applications. With their compact structure, flexible deployment options, and high operational efficiency, they address the shortcomings of traditional substations—such as large land footprints and lengthy construction periods—thereby serving as a key enabler for the power industry’s transition toward intelligent and green operations.

Definition and Core Components of Box-Type Substations

As the name suggests, a packaged substation is a complete distribution system that integrates high-voltage switchgear, distribution transformers, low-voltage distribution equipment, reactive power compensation devices, and auxiliary equipment within a sealed metal enclosure. Essentially, it functions as a “miniature substation,” with its traditional substation functions consolidated into a portable or permanently installed cabinet through factory prefabrication and on-site assembly.

From a structural perspective, a packaged substation is typically divided into three main sections: the high-voltage room, the transformer room, and the low-voltage room. The high-voltage room is equipped with incoming feeder cabinets, metering cabinets, and outgoing feeder cabinets, which are responsible for receiving and distributing high-voltage electrical energy; the transformer room houses dry-type or oil-immersed transformers to perform voltage transformation; and the low-voltage room contains low-voltage distribution cabinets, capacitor compensation cabinets, and other equipment to complete the final distribution of electrical energy and reactive power compensation. In addition, the enclosure adopts a double-layer steel plate structure with insulating material sandwiched between the layers, providing dust-proof, moisture-proof, and corrosion-resistant properties to ensure stable operation of the equipment in harsh environments.

Significant Advantages of Box-Type Substations

Compared with conventional substations, prefabricated (box-type) substations offer numerous advantages. First, they occupy a significantly smaller footprint—typically only one-fifth to one-tenth that of traditional substations—making them particularly well-suited for land-scarce areas such as city centers and commercial districts. For instance, a commercial complex in Beijing that adopted a box-type substation reduced its land use by approximately 80%, freeing up substantial space for underground parking and landscaping.

Secondly, the construction cycle is significantly shorter. Traditional substations typically require several months, or even a year, from design to commissioning, whereas modular prefabricated substations are designed with a modular approach: equipment installation and commissioning are completed in the factory, leaving only foundation work and on-site lifting of the containerized enclosure, which can reduce the entire process to just a few weeks. This “plug-and-play” feature makes them indispensable for emergency power supply and temporary construction sites.

Furthermore, box-type substations boast high operational reliability. Their fully enclosed design effectively isolates the equipment from external environmental disturbances, thereby reducing the rate of equipment failures. In addition, the compact internal layout and short cable runs minimize line losses and potential safety hazards. Some high-end models are also equipped with intelligent monitoring systems that provide real-time surveillance of parameters such as temperature, humidity, and load, enabling remote fault diagnosis and automatic transfer switching, which significantly enhances power supply security.

Application Scenarios of Box-Type Substations

The flexibility of packaged substations makes them widely applicable across multiple sectors. In urban power grids, they are commonly deployed as terminal substations in 10-kV distribution networks, providing reliable power supply to residential communities, schools, hospitals, and other facilities. For instance, during the renovation of an aging residential area in Shanghai, replacing conventional pole-mounted transformers with packaged substations not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood but also resolved low-voltage issues, leading to a significant increase in resident satisfaction with electricity services.

In the industrial sector, packaged substations are an ideal solution for factories, mines, and other facilities. They can be custom-designed to meet specific capacity requirements, enabling rapid expansion or relocation. For instance, an automotive manufacturer expanded its production line by deploying two 1,250 kVA packaged substations, which were energized in just 10 days—thereby preventing production losses caused by power-supply delays.

In addition, packaged substations play a crucial role in the new energy sector. At photovoltaic power plants and wind farms, they serve as the hub of the collection network, aggregating distributed power generation and stepping up the voltage before transmitting it to the grid. For instance, a certain offshore wind power project deployed waterproof packaged substations that successfully withstood salt spray corrosion and typhoon impacts, thereby ensuring the long-term stable operation of the equipment.

Future Development Trends

With the advancement of the “dual carbon” goals, packaged substations are evolving toward greater intelligence and environmental sustainability. Intelligent packaged substations leverage the integration of IoT and big data technologies to achieve comprehensive real-time monitoring of equipment status and automated operation-and-maintenance decision-making. For example, State Grid’s “Smart Energy Unit” packaged substation can automatically adjust reactive power compensation, reducing line losses by more than 5%.

In terms of green transformation, the adoption of low-carbon technologies such as amorphous alloy transformers and environmentally friendly gas-insulated switchgear further reduces the energy consumption and carbon emissions of packaged substations. Meanwhile, the modular design philosophy is driving product development toward standardization and recyclability, thereby minimizing resource waste.

As the “light cavalry” of the power industry, prefabricated substations—characterized by their efficiency, flexibility, and reliability—are redefining the way modern distribution networks are built. From urban street corners to remote construction sites, from industrial parks to new-energy hubs, these compact units deliver substantial power output, providing robust electrical support for economic and social development. With ongoing technological advancements, prefabricated substations are poised to unlock even broader application prospects, serving as a critical cornerstone in the construction of a new-type power system.
