Abstract
Removing dust from the switchgear is a key maintenance task to ensure safe operation and prolong the service life of the switchgear. Through the scientific and standardised cleaning process, not only can effectively prevent short circuit or overheating faults caused by dust accumulation, but also significantly improve the stability and reliability of the distribution cabinet. The following are the detailed steps and precautions for the cleaning of distribution cabinets:
I. Pre-conditions for safe operation
Verification of power failure
Before starting the cleaning, the power supply of the distribution cabinet must be completely cut off, and the inlet and outlet terminals of the distribution cabinet must be verified by three times of power test using the power checker. Only when the checker clearly shows that there is no voltage, the door of the distribution cabinet can be opened for subsequent operations, which is the core step to guarantee the safety maintenance of the distribution cabinet.
Wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Operators are required to wear insulated gloves, goggles, dust masks and anti-static overalls. These protective equipments can effectively isolate the potential hazards such as metal shavings, insulating material dust, etc. that may exist inside the cabinet, and at the same time, avoid the interference of human body static electricity on the electronic components of the cabinet.
Cleaning tools and methods
Recommended tools
Soft brush and compressed air: use soft brush with long nozzle compressed air canister, can be efficiently removed from the internal surface of the cabinet and the crevices in the ash. Pay attention to the compressed air pressure should be controlled at 0.3-0.5MPa, to avoid excessive airflow causing the components of the distribution cabinet to shift.
HEPA hoover: The hoover equipped with HEPA filter can accurately adsorb particles above 0.3 micron, especially suitable for deep cleaning of the precision components area of the distribution cabinet to prevent secondary dust pollution.
Prohibition
It is strictly prohibited to wash the inside of the distribution cabinet with water directly, if you need to wipe it partially, you should use a slightly wet non-woven cloth, and dry it thoroughly with a dry cloth immediately after cleaning to ensure that the inside of the cabinet is completely dry before resuming the power supply. The humid environment may cause the insulation performance of the cabinet to decline, and even cause short-circuit accidents.

Partition Cleaning Strategy
Surface Cleaning: Use soft brush to clean the surface of the cabinet and the door plate of the cabinet, and then use a semi-dry cloth to wipe it until there is no visible dust.
Internal component cleaning:
For high-voltage components such as circuit breakers and contactors, use compressed air to blow along the vertical direction to avoid lateral airflow leading to contact offset of the distribution cabinet.
When cleaning the PLC control module, use an anti-static brush to sweep gently after turning off the power to prevent static electricity from damaging the circuit board.
Cable terminals should be cleaned with brush head wrapped with dust cover to avoid metal debris falling into the cabinet.
Sensitive components protection
During the cleaning process, special attention should be paid to the temperature control sensors, relays and other precision components in the distribution cabinet. The operation should be moved gently to avoid loosening of lines or shifting of components inside the cabinet due to external force. For the area marked ‘not clean’ (such as sealing relays), it is necessary to keep the original state and make records.
Maintenance Plan and Record Management
Regular Cleaning Cycle
Adjust the cleaning frequency according to the environment where the cabinet is located:
Ordinary industrial environment: quarterly cleaning is recommended;
Dust-intensive area (e.g., chemical plant): monthly cleaning and increase the frequency of dust net replacement;
Special Climate Zone (high humidity/high salt spray): can be shortened to once every two months, and focus on checking the sealing of the cabinet body.
Cleaning Record and Tracking
After each cleaning, you need to fill in the ‘Maintenance Record Form for Distribution Cabinets’, recording the following in detail:
Cleaning date, executives and the use of consumables;
Abnormal problems found (e.g. loosening of components, aging of insulation, etc.);
Temporary treatment measures taken and subsequent maintenance plan.
Systematic recording can provide data support for the preventive maintenance of switchboards and reduce the risk of sudden failure.
V. Manufacturer's Guidelines and Compliance Requirements
When carrying out any maintenance on the distribution cabinet, it is important to consult the Operation and Maintenance Manual provided by the equipment manufacturer as a matter of priority, focusing on the following:
Types of cleaning agents recommended by the manufacturer (e.g., whether or not alcohol solvents are allowed to be used);
Cleaning precautions for special components (e.g., frequency inverter, capacitors);
Cleaning standards corresponding to the IP protection level of the distribution cabinet body.
Strict adherence to the manufacturer's specifications ensures that cleaning operations are both safe and efficient.
By following these standardised procedures, the operational reliability of distribution cabinets can be significantly improved and their service life extended. Regular, standardised cleaning and maintenance should be an important part of the whole life cycle management of distribution cabinets, providing a solid guarantee for the stable operation of power systems.
