Abstract

Core features
1. High insulation and arc extinguishing performance
Superior insulation:
SF6 gas insulation strength is 2.5 times that of air (under the same pressure), high breakdown voltage, can achieve high voltage level (e.g., 10kV/24kV/40.5kV) insulation in a compact space, reducing equipment size.
Strong Arc Extinguishing Capability:
SF6 gas has an arc extinguishing capability of 100 times that of air, which can extinguish the arc quickly and is suitable for frequent operation and high short circuit breaking requirements (e.g., 40kA/0.5s arc ignition resistance).
2. Fully enclosed, fully insulated design
Sealed structure:
All electrically charged parts are sealed in SF6 gas, isolated from the external environment (such as dust, humidity, corrosive gases), to avoid flashover or insulation failure caused by environmental factors.
High protection level:
Outdoor type cabinet can reach IP67 (dustproof and waterproof), and indoor type is usually IP4X, which ensures the stable operation of the equipment in harsh environments (e.g., high-altitude, multi-earthquake, windy and snowy areas).
3. Safety and reliability
No risk of electric shock:
The electrically charged part is completely enclosed in the grounded metal shell, the operator can not touch the electrically charged body, high security.
Fire and explosion-proof:
SF6 is an inert gas, non-flammable, no risk of fire or explosion, and the design of the pressure relief channel can prevent the internal failure of the gas pressure is too high leading to an explosion.
Strong anti-interference ability:
The metal casing shields electromagnetic and electrostatic interference and reduces interference with peripheral equipment.
4. Environmental adaptability
Extreme environment applicable:
Wide range of applicable temperature (e.g. -40℃~+40℃) and altitude up to 3000 metres, which is suitable for complex areas such as high cold, high altitude and many earthquakes.
Free from pollution:
The sealed design effectively resists environmental threats such as dirt, salt spray and chemical corrosion.
5. Compact and space-saving
Compact design:
The volume is only 1/3~1/2 of the traditional air-insulated cabinets (e.g. 550mm wide cabinets for GIS cabinets), which significantly reduces the footprint and is suitable for space-constrained scenarios (e.g. underground substations, city centres).
6. Maintenance-free and long life
Sealed gas system:
SF6 gas sealing cycle, no need for frequent maintenance (e.g. cleaning the insulation gap), life expectancy of up to 20 years or more.
Modular Expansion:
supports unitary or common box module combination (e.g. CC, CCC and other combination forms of HYXGN cabinet), which is easy to expand and maintain.
7. Intelligence and automation
Remote monitoring:
Some models are integrated with intelligent sensors and communication modules to support condition monitoring, fault diagnosis and remote control (e.g. ABB UniSafe cabinets).
Automated operation:
supports electric/spring mechanism, realising automatic opening and closing of earthing switch and disconnecting switch, and improving operation efficiency.
Environmental protection and sustainability
Environmental challenges of SF6 gas:
SF6 is a potent greenhouse gas (with a GWP value of up to 23,500), the leakage of which can exacerbate environmental problems. Therefore, the industry trend is:
Reducing SF6 usage: adopting ‘less SF6’ or ‘no SF6’ design (e.g. nitrogen, dry air replacing part of the insulation medium).
Sealing technology upgrade: Reduce the risk of leakage through high-precision welding (e.g. 3~5mm stainless steel cabinet) and leakage detection technology.
Recycling: mandatory equipment decommissioning recovery of SF6 gas.
Typical Application Scenarios
Urban Distribution Network:
Used in cable ring network and secondary distribution station, supporting ‘hand-in-hand’ power supply and improving power supply reliability.
Industrial and commercial facilities:
is suitable for factories, airports, subways, tunnels and other places where space is limited and high reliability is required.
Harsh environment areas:
such as high altitude, wind and snow, coastal areas with high salt spray, or heavily polluted industrial areas.
Potential disadvantages and considerations
High initial cost:
SF6 gas, sealing process and modular design of the equipment price is higher than the traditional air-insulated cabinets.
Risk of gas leakage:
SF6 gas pressure needs to be checked regularly to prevent leakage that may lead to insulation failure or environmental problems.
Complicated troubleshooting:
The sealing structure may increase the difficulty of replacing internal components, requiring professional tools and personnel.
V. Technology Development Trends
Environmental Alternatives:
Promote nitrogen or dry air as auxiliary insulation medium to reduce SF6 consumption.
Intelligent upgrading:
Integrate Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to achieve predictive maintenance.
Modularity and standardisation:
promotes standardised cabinet design to reduce installation and expansion costs.
Conclusion
SF6 gas-insulated cabinets have become the mainstream choice for high-voltage power distribution due to their high reliability, compact structure, and strong environmental adaptability, especially for complex environments and space-constrained scenarios. However, the environmental challenges of SF6 need to be paid attention to, and the future will be developed in the direction of less SF6, intelligence and modularity.
