Abstract

Mainly divided into air insulation ( AIS ) and gas insulation ( GIS ). AIS Low cost but large in size and affected by ambient humidity; GIS (Inflatable switchgear) is compact, maintenance-free, and unaffected by environmental conditions, but it has a higher cost and— SF6 Gas leak monitoring is required.

In addition to the two mainstream insulation methods—air insulation and gas insulation—high-voltage switchgear also employs several other insulation approaches, such as solid insulation and hybrid insulation. Solid insulation primarily uses solid materials like epoxy resin as the insulating medium. Its advantages include a compact structure, stable insulation performance, and resistance to environmental factors, enabling it to maintain high insulation levels over the long term. However, solid insulation also has certain drawbacks: once the insulating material ages or is damaged, repairs can be relatively difficult and may require complete component replacement, thereby increasing maintenance costs. Hybrid insulation, on the other hand, combines the benefits of both air insulation and solid insulation. It employs solid insulating materials in critical areas while using air insulation in other parts, thus achieving both reliable insulation performance and reduced costs. Nevertheless, hybrid insulation designs are relatively complex and demand precise calculations of the proportions and layouts of different insulating materials to ensure the overall reliability of the insulation system. Therefore, when selecting an insulation method for high-voltage switchgear, it is essential to comprehensively consider various factors, including the equipment’s operating environment, cost budget, and ease of maintenance, in order to choose the most suitable insulation solution.
