Abstract

With the development of the economy and technological advancements, the use of cable-based power supply in urban networks has become an inevitable trend in the development of distribution networks. Ring network power supply, due to its economy and reliability, has become the preferred form for cable-based distribution networks. The development of urban distribution networks has led to an increasing proportion of ring network power supply in user power supply schemes. As the main equipment for ring network power supply, cable branch boxes are receiving more attention from power supply departments and users. The application of cable branch boxes is extensive, mainly used in distribution line switching stations, ring network rooms, distribution stations, distribution boxes, and pre-installed box-type substations, with a large quantity and variety.

The classification of cable branch boxes essentially depends on the different load switches used. Therefore, cable branch boxes are also named after load switches. A load switch is a type of switching device that lies between a circuit breaker and an isolating switch. It has a simple arc-extinguishing device and can disconnect rated load current and certain overload currents but cannot interrupt short-circuit currents.

The structure of a load switch adds an arc-extinguishing device compared to an isolating switch but is simpler than a circuit breaker. The load switch is combined with high-voltage fuses to form a combined electrical device, which can replace expensive circuit breakers. The load switch disconnects load current while the fuse disconnects short-circuit and overload currents, thus reducing the cost of distribution devices and simplifying operation and maintenance.

The main performance of cable branch boxes depends on the performance of the load switches used. Therefore, the development process of cable branch boxes is essentially the development process of load switches. The development and application of cable branch boxes have basically gone through the evolution from gas-insulated cable branch boxes to pressurized gas and vacuum cable branch boxes, as well as the currently widely used semi-gas-insulated and fully gas-insulated cable branch boxes.
