Abstract

In a box-type substation, if the voltage of the relay protection calibration instrument exceeds the maximum allowable operating voltage of the transformer during operation, it is referred to as transformer overvoltage.

1. Concept of overvoltage:

  Box-type substationIn a box-type substation, if the voltage of the relay protection calibration instrument exceeds its maximum allowable operating voltage during operation, it is referred to as transformer overvoltage.

2. Classification of overvoltage:

Overvoltage can cause significant damage to the insulation of transformers, even leading to insulation breakdown.

Overvoltage can be divided into atmospheric overvoltage and operational overvoltage:

(1) Atmospheric overvoltage: When transmission lines are directly struck by lightning or discharge from thunderclouds, the electromagnetic field undergoes drastic changes, resulting in what is known as atmospheric overvoltage;

(2) Operational overvoltage: When the transformer in the box-type substation or the switch on the line is closed or opened, the overvoltage generated by the oscillation of electromagnetic energy in the system is referred to as operational overvoltage.

These two types of overvoltages in transformers are transient with short action times. The operational overvoltage of the relay protection calibration instrument is generally 3.0 to 4.5 times the rated voltage. Atmospheric overvoltage can be very high, reaching 8 to 12 times the rated voltage, with extremely uneven voltage distribution within the windings, causing some turns to bear high voltage. Therefore, necessary measures must be taken to prevent the occurrence of overvoltage and to provide effective protection.
